Every October, our phone rings with some version of the same request: "We'd love the kitchen done by Thanksgiving." And every October, we have to share the honest math — the homeowners hosting the holidays in a new kitchen made their decisions back in the summer. A remodel's construction phase is only the visible half of the project. The design, selections, permitting, and ordering that come first take six to ten weeks on their own — which means July isn't early to start planning a fall project. It's exactly on time.

The Timeline Nobody Tells You About

Here's the real anatomy of a mid-size remodel. Design and revisions: two to four weeks of measuring, drawing, and refining the plan until it's right. Selections: another two to three weeks choosing cabinetry, stone, tile, fixtures, and hardware — decisions that go quickly with a designer guiding them and slowly without one. Then the long pole: ordering. Custom and semi-custom cabinetry typically runs six to ten weeks from order to delivery; special-order tile, windows, and plumbing fixtures have their own lead times. Permits in most western-suburb villages add two to four weeks in parallel. Start that clock in July and construction begins in early fall; start it in October and you're hosting Thanksgiving amid drywall dust — or waiting until spring.

Why Materials Wait for No One

Lead times are the least controllable part of any project, and the single best defense is ordering early. When every item is selected and ordered before demolition day, the project runs continuously — no three-week mid-project pause because a faucet is on backorder. This is also where avoiding mid-stream changes pays off enormously; changed orders restart lead-time clocks and cascade through every trade that follows. Fall Is a Great Season to Build

There's a quiet practical bonus to fall construction in Illinois: mild temperatures are ideal for anything involving ventilation, adhesives, and finishes; materials acclimate well; and exterior-touching work (windows, doors, venting) happens before the freeze. Wrap construction by late November and the disruption lands in the school-routine season — not during summer vacations or the holidays themselves. Families are back on schedules, which oddly makes living through a remodel easier, not harder.

What "Starting Now" Actually Looks Like

Starting in July doesn't mean a dumpster in the driveway next week. It means a consultation and site measure while the calendar is still open; design development while you're at the pool; selections made calmly in air-conditioned showrooms instead of under deadline pressure; permits filed in August; materials ordered and received; and a construction start in September or October with everything on hand. The project you barely feel is the one that was thoroughly planned before the first hammer swung.
